Lost Wax Candle Stick Holder
Cast bronze
One evening whilst eating at a busy Turkish restaurant the waiter came round the tables lighting the candles in the tops of the wine bottles stood on each table. Our candle had burnt away the evening before leaving just a hole in the previous build-up of drips and runs which had solidified around the neck of the bottle. As the waiter pushed in a new candle, it struck me that it was the remaining wax that formed the candlestick holder as much as the bottle.
At about this period I had been dealing with the an ironmongery company for the architectural practice I worked for, and whilst discussing the production of some new door handles heard mention a process called lost wax casting.
The idea of making a bronze candlestick holder in the shape of the wax lost during the burning of the candle using the lost wax casting process amused me. After burning lots of candles to get a wax suitable for casting, I created this.
