Triskele shade
Plastic sheet, 2001
The original three-pronged 20W low energy, compact fluorescent light bulb was the starting point of an exercise in exploring a simple economic pendant lamp shade.
Designed to be mass-produced cheaply and efficiently, the shade is produced using a single stamping process, from a single sheet material with no additional fixings. Three identical tessellating "tuning fork" like shapes are bent and folded to create the cylindrical shade. Unlike the conventional shade, the Triskele is attached directly to the bulb rather than the pendant fixing. Pin wheeling around the centre each piece forms a third of the shade's circumference each. The compression of all three sections holds the cylindrical form together, without the need for addition fixings.
