Stroud Valleys Artspace, Stroud, Gloucestershire
Project Architect for Tony Fretton Architects.
Phase II completed 2006
Stroud Valleys Artspace is a regional organisation which provides artist studio spaces & co-ordinates creative projects within their premises & throughout the local area. Since 2001 they have occupied a series of neglected buildings on a confined, sloping site in the town centre, & extensive refurbishment enabled by Arts Council funding & public grants began in 2003.
After a feasibility study to investigate means to rationalise the ad-hoc existing internal arrangements & give level access to all storeys, works were split into four phases. Phases I & II which were completed in 2006 involved extensive refurbishment of the existing building fabric, a new entrance, creation of a consistent ground floor level through excavation, reconfiguration of internal circulation with new lift & staircases, new roof coverings & introduction of rooflights.
